Nullifiers of Islam | Sheikh Abdullah Nasir Rehmani

Nawaqidh is the plural of Naaqidh which means that which breaks, spoils, destroys, causes a downfall etc.
This book refers to that which breaks and destroys al-Islam.
Islam is of 3 things:
a. al-Istislamu lillahi fi Tawheedillah – To completely submit before Allah with His Tawheed.
b. Wal Inqiyaadu lillahi bi ta’tillah – To completely submit before Allah with obedience and all the rites.
c. Wal Bara’a min Shirkihi wa Aalihi – Hating Shirk done towards Allah and the disobedience of His Messenger.

There are deeds and actions that could destroy a person’s Iman. This is why a fear of such happening must always be present in the heart of a Muslim so that they are always on guard and conscious of falling into such deeds.

Abu Hurairah reported: Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night. A man would be a believer in the morning and turn to disbelief in the evening, or he would be a believer in the evening and turn disbeliever in the morning, and would sell his Faith for worldly goods.” [Muslim]
These are the fitan that would shave off a person, not his head, but his Deen.

When the Muwahhid, the Imam of Muwahiddeen, the Haneef, the Khaleel of Allah made dua to Allah to safeguard him and his progeny from idol-worship, then where do we stand with regards to fearing for ourselves. This was when the fitnah of idol-worship was rampant around him.

Abdullah b. Amr b. al-‘As reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying:

Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the two fingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns that to any (direction) He likes.
Then Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:

O Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts to Thine obedience. [Sahih Muslim]

Allah mentions the dua of the pious in the Quran:
Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower. [Surah Aal Imran, Ayah 8]

We ask Allah not just for guidance to the Straight Path but also to make us steadfast on it.

There are 10 actions that nullify and destroy a person’s Islam because of which he becomes a disbeliever after being a believer. There are more than 10 nullifiers and the number isn’t restricted by it. Sheikh’s mention of 10 is to highlight the major nullifiers and the usul of nullification.
All these nullifiers in some capacity or the other goes against either the testimony of the Oneness of Allah or the testimony of the Prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ.

First Nullifier: Shirk in the Ibadat of Allah. This Shirk could be regarding Rububiyyah, Uluhiyyah or Asma wa Sifat.
The earlier generations were sound regarding Rububiyyah of Allah but failed with regards to the Uluhiyyah of Allah hence making them disbelievers.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin. [Surah an-Nisa, Ayah 48]

Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers. [Surah al-Maidah, Ayah 72]

Sheikh mentions an example of sacrificing in the name of other than Allah. This is something which is seen to be widespread and rampant in the society even today. This is also further coupled with black magic and sacrificing for that which itself is an act of Shirk.
Throughout the Quran we see Allah mention sacrifice with Salah and this shows the important station it holds.
Shirk is of 2 types:
1. Shirk Akbar: Directing any act of worship no matter how big or small towards other than Allah. This removes a person from the fold of Islam. There are 6 consequences of committing such in the Quran:
a. No forgiveness
b. Residing in Hell forever
c. Deprived of Jannah.
d. Blood and Money becomes Halal (for Rulers and the Authority. Not common masses.)
e. All his deeds are destroyed and turned to dust (not accepted).
f. Exit from the Nation (Millat)of Islam and being a Muslim.

Narrated Abu Huraira: When the Prophet ﷺ died and Abu Bakr became his successor and some of the Arabs reverted to disbelief, `Umar said, “O Abu Bakr! How can you fight these people although Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, ‘I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, ‘and whoever said, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, Allah will save his property and his life from me, unless (he does something for which he receives legal punishment) justly, and his account will be with Allah?’
“Abu Bakr said, “By Allah! I will fight whoever differentiates between prayers and Zakat as Zakat is the right to be taken from property (according to Allah’s Orders). By Allah! If they refused to pay me even a kid they used to pay to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, I would fight with them for withholding it.”
Umar said, “By Allah: It was nothing, but I noticed that Allah opened Abu Bakr’s chest towards the decision to fight, therefore I realized that his decision was right.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

2. Shirk Asghar: Such a deed that leads to Shirk Akbar. Generally this has to do with the actions of the tongue.
Ex: swearing in other than the name of Allah.
Another manifestation of this is the action of the heart. Ex: Showing off.

Mahmud bin Labid narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk (polytheism), showing-off (of good deeds).” [Ahmad]

a. A person doesn’t become a kafir because of these actions.
b. He doesn’t leave the fold and nation of Islam.
c. His deeds are in danger of being destroyed.
d. He’s in danger of not attaining the Mercy of Allah.
e. He could be sent to Hell but not forever.
f. His Blood and Money doesn’t become Halal.

Ma’qil ibn Yasar reported: I departed with Abu Bakr to meet the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet said,

“O Abu Bakr, there is idolatry among you more hidden than the crawling of an ant.”
Abu Bakr said, “Is there idolatry other than to make another god alongside Allah?” The Prophet ﷺ said,

“By one in whose hand is my soul, there is idolatry more hidden than the crawling of an ant. Shall I not tell you something to say to rid you of it both minor and major? Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in you that I associate partners with you while I know, and I seek your forgiveness for what I do not know.” [al-Adab al-Mufrad]

Second Nullifier: Setting intermediaries between oneself and Allah. Calling upon them in dua, seeking shifa and having trust (tawakkul) in them.

Setting up intermediaries can be of 2 types:
a. Calling upon the one who is set as an intermediary. This is clear Shirk which removes a person from the fold of Islam. Ex: Calling upon Gawth Abdul Qadir Geelani.

b. Calling upon Allah but through an intermediary. Ex: Calling upon Allah through the Prophets. This isn’t shirk in itself but a mighty innovation. Just because it’s an innovation and not shirk doesn’t mean we take the matter lightly. Innovations are the cause of deeds getting destroyed and repentance being rejected.
What’s interesting is that man is ready to take every intermediary other than the one Allah has already given him. What is this intermediary to Allah? These are the commands and the obligations of Allah upon us and the Sunnah of His Messenger. Only through this can salvation be attained.
What is a Prophet but an intermediary between the Creator and the creation.
He brings the commandments of Allah to the people and guides them according to it.

Calling upon someone itself is an act of Ibadah.
An-Nu’man bin Bashir reported: The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Du’a (supplication) is worship.” [Abu Dawud].

Allah tells us in the Quran:

And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware. [Surah al-Ahqaf, Ayah 5]
This includes calling upon stones, trees, leaders, saints, Prophets, angels or anything else other than Allah.

Those being called upon cannot respond to you till the Day of Judgement. They have no idea regarding your invocation and on the Day of Judgement they will become your enemies instead of saving you.

See Fadhail Amal and them talking about hands coming out of the graves and people speaking to them from within. The Qur’an tells us explicitly that this cannot happen. Even if you do hear or see this then this is Shaitan.

Allah has given us 3 means of intercession:
a. Using the Names and Attributes of Allah.
Ex: The Dua of the Ant – Allah mentions in the Quran,

Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, “O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not.” [Surah an-Naml, Ayah 18]

b. Using good deeds done purely for the sake of Allah.
Ex: Story of Three persons blocked in a Cave.

c. Asking the pious and the scholars (alive) to make dua for you. Even here the tawakkul of benefit has to be solely in Allah.
Ibn Umar narrated from Umar: that he sought permission from the Prophet ﷺ concerning Umrah, so he said:

“O my little brother, include us in your supplication and do not forget us.” [Jami’ at-Tirmidhi]

Third Nullifier: The person who doesn’t consider/call the mushrik as a mushrik or doubts that they are Kafir or considers their religion (aqeedah) to have truth, then indeed such a person has committed kufr.

The person doubts that a mushrik is a mushrik even though he affirms their Shirk by the tongue.

Allah Himself has announced the Kufr of the mushrikeen like that of Christians, Jews and the polytheists of Makkah.

Allah says in the Quran:

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, “Three”; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs. [Surah an-Nisa, Ayah 171]

They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” Allah is the third of three.” And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. [Surah al-Maidah, Ayah 73]

Christians are also of 3 types:
Those who believe Isa is Allah
Those who believe Isa is the son of Allah
Those who believe there are 3 entities, or the trinity, the unity of which is Allah – Father, Son and the Spirit.

Allah mentions regarding the Jews:

And [recall] when you said, “O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions.” [Moses] said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked.” And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing. [Surah al-Baqarah, Ayah 71]

Shirk is a conspiracy to attribute weakness, incapacity, incapability and confusion towards Allah.

There are 2 ways of looking at the Hukm:
1. Takfeer Mutlaqan: We say that all those who worship idols, supplicate to the graves etc are all mushrik. This is apparent by their outer as well as inner actions which are expressed. We do this without attributing it to a particular person.
2. Takfeer Muta’yyin: We don’t know the inner dimensions of a persons heart. This kind of takfeer is something unique to Allah. We see a person protesting to the graves and we tell them that what they are doing constitutes shirk instead of takfeer on them.

Ex: Cursing the Prophet ﷺ is Kufr. Ammar Ibn Yasir during the prosecution in Makkah was tortured till he spoke ill of the Prophet ﷺ. He was forgiven by the Prophet ﷺ because he said so under threat of life and never meant it in his heart. Allah revealed regarding this,

Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief… except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah , and for them is a great punishment. [Surah an-Nahl, Ayah 106]

Islam constitutes of outward actions
a. Testimony of the tongue.
b. Establishing salah, fast, zakat and Hajj.
Anyone who is seen doing these actions is called a Muslim. Iman on the other hand is the inner actions and state of a person which includes believing in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement and Qadr etc.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said,

“If a man says to his brother, O Kafir (disbeliever)!’ Then surely one of them is such (i.e., a Kafir). ” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Considering the religion of others to have truth is of the highest forms of Kufr. They don’t deserve any kind of praise or support for being from another religion.
It was narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah that Umar ibn al-Khattab came to the Prophet ﷺ with some written material he had got from one of the people of the Book. He read it to the Prophet ﷺ, and he got angry and said: “Are you confused (about your religion), O son of al-Khattaab? By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I have brought it (the message of Islam) to you clear and pure. Do not ask them about anything, lest they tell you something true and you disbelieve it, or they tell you something false and you believe it. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if Musa (عليه السلام) were alive, he would have no option but to follow me.” [Ahmad]

Fourth Nullifier: Believing that the way to Allah other than that taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is more liked, complete or better. Believing that the laws and commands of another is more complete or better than those of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Like the laws of the Tawaghit over the Shariah of Allah and His Messenger. Such a person becomes a Kafir.

This is something rampant which we see today. People believe that the Shariah was something of the past and things in it need to be changed to fit into the society today.

The Shariah and Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is fitting for every strand of society across the board, to be applicable and to accommodate everything till the Day of Judgement. Numerous laws and inventions are going to come and go as man progresses. These could be laws of the country, tribe, family or practices of those before. No other law can be considered better or more complete than that of the Prophet ﷺ. This was a point which the Prophet ﷺ used to stress in nearly every khutba of his.

The Prophet’s ﷺ face used to become red and it was as though he was admonishing the sahaba when he used to warn them about this.
Narrated `Abdullah:

The best talk (speech) is Allah’s Book ‘Qur’an), and the best way is the way of Muhammad, and the worst matters are the heresies (those new things which are introduced into the religion); and whatever you have been promised will surely come to pass, and you cannot escape (it). [Sahih al-Bukhari]

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:”In his Khutbah the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to praise Allah as He deserves to be praised, then he would say:

‘Whomsoever Allah guides, none can lead him astray, and whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.’
Then he said:

‘The Hour and I have been sent like these two.’
Whenever he mentioned the Hour, his cheeks would turn red, and he would raise his voice and become angry, as if he were warning of an approaching army and saying: ‘An army is coming to attack you in the morning, or in the evening!’ (Then he said):

‘Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, then these are my responsibility, and I am the most entitled to take care of the believers.'” [Sunan an-Nasai]

Whatever you do make sure that it’s actually from the Prophet ﷺ and not just some inauthentic attribution. Once the authenticity has been established then believe without a shred of doubt that this is the most excellent of actions.

What this Nullifier means is not just adopting a foreign law or it’s likes. That has become the norm of the day. What is being implied here is give preference, implementing these other laws and actually believing that these are better than the Shariah and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

What is a Taghut?
Any such thing or person that rules contrary or other than that from the Shariah of Allah and His Messenger. This is derived from “Tughyan” which means to exceed all bounds. Ex: The flooding of water over the banks.
The boundary of a person is that he is from the Ummah of the Prophet ﷺ and is bound by his laws. The status and position of authority exceeds it’s bounds when such a person’s law or word is taken to be equivalent or greater than that of the Prophet.

Taghut could be either in matters of worship or obedience/submission (إِطَاعَة) to an authority. Submitting to anyone other than Allah in matters of worship is making that thing a taghut while being obedient to anything other than the Prophet ﷺ contrary to his Sunnah is making that thing a taghut.

On the authority of Abu Najeeh al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a sermon by which our hearts were filled with fear and tears came to our eyes. So we said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! It is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us.”
He said,

“I counsel you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah, and to listen and obey [your leader], even if a slave were to become your ameer. Verily he among you who lives long will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafa ar-Rashideen (the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Cling to it stubbornly [literally: with your molar teeth]. Beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for verily every bidah (innovation) is misguidance.” [Abu Dawud]

Allah seals the matter when He orders us in the Quran:

“And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain. And have Taqwa of Allah. Verily Allah is severe in punishment.” [Surah al-Hashr, Ayah 7]

Imam al-Sa’di, in his book of tafsir, mentions this ayah and writes:

So He said, “And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain” and this encompasses both the fundamentals of the deen and its secondary matters, both what is apparent and what is hidden, and what the Messenger came with is compulsory upon the slaves to take it and to obey it, and to not differ from it. For the text of the Messenger about the ruling of a thing is like the text of Allah the Exalted. There is no exception for anyone nor is there any excuse for the the one who abandons it, and it is not permissible to elevate anyone’s speech above his speech.

Then He commanded al-taqwa of Him, which consists of the hearts and the limbs, and concerning the dunya and the aakhirah, and by which is attained the perpetual joy and a great success, and by which one may avoid everlasting misery and eternal punishment. So He said, “And have Taqwa of Allah. Verily Allah is severe in punishment” for those who abandon having al-taqwa, and (instead) chose to follow desires. [Taysir al-Kareem al-Rahman p. 1003]

Fifth Nullifier: A person who has hatred and dislike towards that which the Prophet ﷺ has brought from Allah. This could be regarding matters of worship, aqeedah, matters of business, marriage or anything else that the Prophet ﷺ brought. This is Kufr by consensus.

A person could be accepting of such matters outwardly in action but harbours a dislike in their hearts regarding it. This takes the same ruling. There’s a difference between hatred and having doubts regarding something.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah – He will waste their deeds.
And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad – and it is the truth from their Lord – He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition. [Surah Muhammad, Ayah 1,2]

Regarding the obedience to that which the Prophet ﷺ came with, Allah states:

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result. [Surah an-Nisa, Ayah 59]

But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission. [Surah an-Nisa, Ayah 65]

a. A person is to refer all matters back to Allah and His Messenger.
b. They have to accept what the Messenger gives them.
c. Not only do they have to accept the decision but also accept it with the heart without holding any hatred towards that decision.

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers – We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination. [Surah an-Nisa, Ayah 115]

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error. [Surah al-Ahzab, Ayah 36]

Narrated Abdullah bin Abbas: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ wrote to Caesar and invited him to Islam and sent him his letter with Dihya Al-Kalbi whom Allah’s Messenger ﷺ ordered to hand it over to the Governor of Busra who would forward it to Caesar. Caesar as a sign of gratitude to Allah, had walked from Hims to Ilya (i.e. Jerusalem) when Allah had granted Him victory over the Persian forces. So, when the letter of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ reached Caesar, he said after reading it, ‘Seek for me any one of his people! (Arabs of Quraish tribe) if present here, in order to ask him about Allah’s Messenger ﷺ.

At that time Abu Sufyan bin Harb was in Sham with some men frown Quraish who had come (to Sham) as merchants during the truce that had been concluded between Allah’s Messenger ﷺ; and the infidels of Quraish. Abu Sufyan said, Caesar’s messenger found us somewhere in Sham so he took me and my companions to Ilya and we were admitted into Ceasar’s court to find him sitting in his royal court wearing a crown and surrounded by the senior dignitaries of the Byzantine. He said to his translator. ‘Ask them who amongst them is a close relation to the man who claims to be a prophet.” Abu Sufyan added, “I replied, ‘I am the nearest relative to him.’ He asked, ‘What degree of relationship do you have with him?’ I replied, ‘He is my cousin,’ and there was none of Bani Abu Manaf in the caravan except myself. Caesar said, ‘Let him come nearer.’ He then ordered that my companions stand behind me near my shoulder and said to his translator, ‘Tell his companions that I am going to ask this man about the man who claims to be a prophet. If he tells a lie, they should contradict him immediately.” Abu Sufyan added, “By Allah! Had it not been shameful that my companions label me a liar, I would not have spoken the truth about him when he asked me. But I considered it shameful to be called a liar by my companions. So I told the truth.

He then said to his translator, ‘Ask him what kind of family does he belong to.’ I replied, ‘He belongs to a noble family amongst us.’ He said, ‘Have anybody else amongst you ever claimed the same before him? ‘I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Had you ever blamed him for telling lies before he claimed what he claimed? ‘ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?’ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, “Do the noble or the poor follow him?’ I replied, ‘It is the poor who follow him.’ He said, ‘Are they increasing or decreasing (day by day)?’ I replied,’ They are increasing.’ He said, ‘Does anybody amongst those who embrace his (the Prophet’s) Religion become displeased and then discard his Religion?’. I replied, ‘No. ‘ He said, ‘Does he break his promises? I replied, ‘No, but we are now at truce with him and we are afraid that he may betray us.” Abu Sufyan added, “Other than the last sentence, I could not say anything against him. Caesar then asked, ‘Have you ever had a war with him?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘What was the outcome of your battles with him?’ I replied, ‘The result was unstable; sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.’ He said, ‘What does he order you to do?’ I said, ‘He tells us to worship Allah alone, and not to worship others along with Him, and to leave all that our fore-fathers used to worship. He orders us to pray, give in charity, be chaste, keep promises and return what is entrusted to us.’ When I had said that, Caesar said to his translator, ‘Say to him: I ask you about his lineage and your reply was that he belonged to a noble family. In fact, all the apostles came from the noblest lineage of their nations. Then I questioned you whether anybody else amongst you had claimed such a thing, and your reply was in the negative. If the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man was following a claim that had been said before him. When I asked you whether he was ever blamed for telling lies, your reply was in the negative, so I took it for granted that a person who did not tell a lie about (others) the people could never tell a lie about Allah. Then I asked you whether any of his ancestors was a king. Your reply was in the negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom. When I asked you whether the rich or the poor people followed him, you replied that it was the poor who followed him. In fact, such are the followers of the apostles. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing. In fact, this is the result of true faith till it is complete (in all respects). I asked you whether there was anybody who, after embracing his religion, became displeased and discarded his religion; your reply was in the negative. In fact, this is the sign of true faith, for when its cheerfulness enters and mixes in the hearts completely, nobody will be displeased with it. I asked you whether he had ever broken his promise. You replied in the negative. And such are the apostles; they never break their promises. When I asked you whether you fought with him and he fought with you, you replied that he did, and that sometimes he was victorious and sometimes you. Indeed, such are the apostles; they are put to trials and the final victory is always theirs. Then I asked you what he ordered you. You replied that he ordered you to worship Allah alone and not to worship others along with Him, to leave all that your fore-fathers used to worship, to offer prayers, to speak the truth, to be chaste, to keep promises, and to return what is entrusted to you. These are really the qualities of a prophet who, I knew (from the previous Scriptures) would appear, but I did not know that he would be from amongst you. If what you say should be true, he will very soon occupy the earth under my feet, and if I knew that I would reach him definitely, I would go immediately to meet Him; and were I with him, then I would certainly wash his feet.’ ”

Abu Sufyan added, “Caesar then asked for the letter of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and it was read. Its contents were: “In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful (This letter is) from Muhammad, the slave of Allah, and His Apostle, to Heraculius, the Ruler of the Byzantine. Peace be upon the followers of guidance. Now then, I invite you to Islam (i.e. surrender to Allah), embrace Islam and you will be safe; embrace Islam and Allah will bestow on you a double reward. But if you reject this invitation of Islam, you shall be responsible for misguiding the peasants (i.e. your nation). O people of the Scriptures! Come to a word common to you and us and you, that we worship. None but Allah, and that we associate nothing in worship with Him; and that none of us shall take others as Lords besides Allah. Then if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are (they who have surrendered (unto Him)..(3.64) Abu Sufyan added, “When Heraclius had finished his speech, there was a great hue and cry caused by the Byzantine Royalties surrounding him, and there was so much noise that I did not understand what they said. So, we were turned out of the court. When I went out with my companions and we were alone, I said to them, ‘Verily, Ibn Abi Kabsha’s (i.e. the Prophet’s) affair has gained power. This is the King of Bani Al-Asfar fearing him.” Abu Sufyan added, “By Allah, I remained low and was sure that his religion would be victorious till Allah converted me to Islam, though I disliked it.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Focus on this part of the narration:
“He said, ‘Does anybody amongst those who embrace his (the Prophet’s) Religion become displeased and then discard his Religion?’. I replied, ‘No.'”

The one asking is the King of the Disbelievers and the one answering is also a Leader of the Disbelievers.
No matter what the Quraysh did to the Believers they didn’t falter.

See Caesar’s reply, “I asked you whether there was anybody who, after embracing his religion, became displeased and discarded his religion; your reply was in the negative. In fact, this is the sign of true faith, for when its cheerfulness enters and mixes in the hearts completely, nobody will be displeased with it.:

Sixth Nullifier: A person who makes fun of anything that is from the Deen be it it’s actions or it’s punishments as brought by the Prophet ﷺ has committed Kufr.

Allah tells us in the Quran that mocking the Prophets and that which they brought is nothing new. The nations of the past also used to do so.

And already were [other] messengers ridiculed before you, and I extended the time of those who disbelieved; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty. [Surah ar-Ra’d, Ayah 32]

Making fun would not just amount to kufr but also entail hypocrisy.

And if you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only conversing and playing.” Say, “Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?”
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you – We will punish another faction because they were criminals.[Surah at-Taubah, Ayah 65,66]

These ayat were revealed during the Battle of Tabuk where people were making fun of the Muslims. Even their words of mockery have been preserved in the books of Hadith.

It is reported on the authority of Ibn Umar, Muhammad ibn Ka’ab, Zaid Ibn Aslam and Qatadah that in the course of the Battle of Tabuk, a man came up and declared: “We have seen none greedier, none so untruthful and none so cowardly as these (Qur’anic) reciters of ours (i.e. Allah’s Messenger and the Companions). Awf Ibn Malik replied: “(In fact) you are the liar and a hypocrite; I shall inform the Messenger of Allah (about what you have said).” And so Awf went to Allah’s Messenger in order to inform him of what had occurred, but he found that Revelation had already preceded him. Then that man came to the Messenger of Allah when he was just starting out on a journey on his camel. The man pleaded: “We were only joking and indulging in travellers’ talk to pass the time.” Ibn Umar said: “It is as if I see him before me now, clinging to the saddle-belt of the Allah’s Messenger’s camel and the rough stones were battering his legs as he ran and he was saying: “We were only talking idly and joking.” But the Messenger of Allah replied: “” Was it at Allah, His Aayat and His Messenger you were mocking? Make no excuses! You have rejected faith after you had accepted it.”” .” He did not look towards him, nor did he say anything further.”

Seventh Nullifier: Magic – Of the types of magic include sarf and Ataf. In totality magic is Kufr but Sheikh makes special mention of the above two because these are prevalent today.
Sarf means to turn away and in this context it refers to turning away the hearts, causing turmoil and discord between a husband and a wife, between two brothers etc.
Magic is such a serious offence that not only the one who practices it but the one who orders it to be done also has committed Kufr. The one who learns it as well as the one who teaches it have committed Kufr. Breaking the magic spell with magic is also Kufr.

Use the Names of Allah and ayat of the Quran to treat it. When the Prophet ﷺ had magic done on him, Allah revealed Surah Falaq and Surah Nas. 11 hairs of the Prophet were used and these Surah contain 11 ayat. With every Ayah one knot of the spell was broken.

Ataf is to create love as in the beloved is at your feet.

Magicians do magic through jinns. Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام had made dua to Allah to grant him a dominion which wouldn’t be granted to anyone else. Allah granted him authority over humans, jinns and animals. The servitude of the jinns that Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام had was not related to magic. They served him because of his authority and his status as a Prophet to them. Banu Israel after the passing away of Prophet Sulaiman spread that this servitude was because of magic. It was for this that Allah had revealed the above mentioned ayat stating how magic was Kufr and the Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام was free from anything such.
Allah sent Harut and Marut as a test to the people. They weren’t really teaching magic. Whoever came to them seeking the knowledge of magic, to them the angels replied,

A person who forges any kind of connection to magic will have committed Kufr.

Eighth Nullifier: Helping the mushrikeen against the Muslims is Kufr. مُظَاهَرَةُ refers to helping or establishing.
Making friends is also a type of establishment. When people meet and get together, their numbers looks huge and this is a kind of help to one another.
To do anything that would help or support the disbelievers against the Muslims is Kufr. They deserve hatred be it living or dead for their belief against Allah.
Joining their celebrations and their burials is also disliked.

Even in the relations the Prophet ﷺ kept with the Jews and others were to call them to Islam and so that by his interactions their hearts would soften and they would accept Islam.
Call them to Islam even if you are to visit them in their sickness. See the incident of the Prophet ﷺ and his own uncle Abu Talib on his deathbed.

Ninth Nullifier: Those who believe that there exists a concession to leave or be exempt from the Shariah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ just like Khidr was exempt from the Shariah of the Prophet Musa عليه السلام. Such a person is a Kafir and such a belief is Kufr.

Why was Khidr exempt from the Shariah of Prophet Musa عليه السلام? This was because he was outside the jurisdiction of Prophet Musa عليه السلام who was sent specifically to Bani Israel. The Shariah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned multiple times across the Quran is for everyone and it stands till the Day of Judgement.

Even if Prophet Musa عليه السلام was alive today he would have to follow the Shariah of the Prophet ﷺ. Even when Prophet Isa عليه السلام will descend he will follow and rule by the Shariah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ in the Quran,

Say, [O Muhammad], “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death.” So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided. [Surah al-A’raf, Ayah 158]

Tenth Nullifier: To turn the face away from the Deen of Allah. He turns away by neither learning the Deen nor implementing it’s obligations.

The term الإِعْرَاضُ can mean to turn away from and the absence of Raghba of the heart. So a person has turned away from the Deen by actions and from the heart as well.
This is like the Jews who had the knowledge and didn’t implement what they knew and like the Christians who didn’t have knowledge but implemented as per their desires.

The term أَظْلَمُ means the greatest type of Dhulm.

These are those people who even though they leave among Muslims, have nothing to do with Muslims or the Deen of Islam. This is likened to being with the disbelievers.

Knowledge is of 2 types:
a. Learning the faraidh of the Deen like the 5 pillars. This is fardh ayn for every Muslim to learn.
b. Learning in-depth the branches of the Deen. This is for the scholars to learn so as to guide the people.

The 10 Nullifiers mentioned here have no difference between the one who does these actions out of jest, seriousness or fear except for the one who is forced (like Ammar Ibn Yasir).

All these nullifiers are so great in their impact yet they are so great in their prevalence and abundance today. It’s for every Muslim to have the fear of these nullifiers in their heart and be vigilant regarding them so as to safeguard oneself.

Allah’s protection is sought from all that which brings upon the wrath and curse of Allah to descend.

Peace and salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ who is the greatest of the creation and his family and his companions.
