Most people would tell you that miracles don’t exist, at least not in our present day and age. I beg to differ. If there is one thing that so many of us underestimate in life, then it is the power of Dua.
We know all too well how Dua has split the sea and the moon, stopped the sun from setting, caused an army of angels to descend from the skies and bring victory in battle, safeguarded an infant cast in a basket on a river and returned him to his mother, brought back to shore a man from the belly of a whale, protected a young boy catapulted into a blazing fire, and so much more.
Miracles. They say they’re illogical, stories and tales of the past, they only happened to legends, or better yet, if they do still exist, then surely they only happen to those ‘worthy enough’. For miracles simply cannot and will not extend to our lives. And so we think…
As for those who believe that miracles are illogical – perhaps it’s cynicism or pragmatism that blinds their sight, perhaps it’s lack of belief or lack of wanting to, or perhaps, it may just be, that their eyes are opened too wide. Because miracles belong in the world of dreams and improbability. Miracles are rooted in belief, and miracles happen to those who see not with their eyes, but with their hearts.
To those who claim miracles existed in historic, medieval times or only happen to those ‘worthy enough’ – then they are only looking with eyes half open. Because, in essence, they are limiting something that is far greater than they could ever fathom. The Power of Allah. Miracles exist for all; past, present and future. For every human being, Muslim and non-Muslim.
Allah says in the Quran:
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” [Surah Al Baqarah, 186]
In this verse, Allah specifically uses the word ‘Daa’ee’, meaning ‘caller’ or ‘supplicant’ in this context. What’s amazing is that Allah could have used the word ‘Muslim’ or even ‘Mu’min’ (believer), but He didn’t. He chose to use the word ‘supplicant’, He chose to not limit His response and His mercy to a select few, and instead made it accessible to all. So, how then can we limit it?
The truth is, miracles happen in all shapes and forms. Little miracles, everyday miracles, life-changing miracles. I have heard my fair share of first-hand accounts, from lives that were saved, illnesses that were cured and provision that came from unimaginable sources to final exams that were aced without preparation, official organisations that made ‘exceptions’ to their systems and paperwork that were frankly unheard of, and the list goes on. Countless scenarios where the impossible was made possible. At the end of the day, all it really takes is the belief to watch miracles unfold before your eyes. As Allah mentions in the verse above, ‘believe in Me’.
